About The Gateway Nursery
Gateway is a long-established nursery provision situated in the village of Bartestree, approximately 3 miles to the east of Hereford.Trading as a charity, the nursery is located in a purpose-built, single level premises on a relatively large site of circa 2 acres, to the east of the village on the Ledbury Road (A438).
The nursery was opened in 1989, initially in the former primary school in the village of Lugwardine, prior to moving to its current location in 2002. The building was both National Lottery and Advantage West Midland funded.
Gateway has now been established for almost 30 years, providing high quality, sessional childcare to children between the ages of 6 months to 4 years. We also offer after-school collection and care to children from 4-11 yrs, picking up from several local schools.
We have a highly qualified, friendly, mature staff and pride ourselves on both our well-resourced indoor space as well as our excellent outdoor facilities. We are currently developing our Forest Schools provision for all ages and we plant, grow and eat lots of our own produce from our polytunnel and gardens.
Gateway is a fully inclusive nursery that welcomes everyone and can provide care and learning for all children within the local community and beyond. We try to cater for all needs where we are able within our scope of practice.
We offer funded places to 2*, 3 and 4 yr olds** (*where specific criteria are met) of between 15 and 30 hours (**conditions apply and are subject to availability).
Please call us to discuss all of your seamless childcare needs. We are registered as an Ofsted ‘Good’ provider and are open from 08.15 to 17.30 between Monday and Friday (earlier and later by arrangement).

Food & Drink
Gateway Nursery provides freshly prepared lunches and a morning and an afternoon snack for a small charge. All food is prepared on the premises by our chef and we try to use as much fresh produce from our poly tunnel as we can. The children get involved with growing and caring for the vegetables and fruit so it is rewarding for them when they can see and eat the results.
(NB Lunches costs are charged daily one a child is in receipt of 3 and 4 year old funding, unless your child opts to bring a packed lunch).
Water is available to drink at all times, to all children, throughout the nursery.
We cater for a variety of dietary allergies – if you have any enquiries or requests in respect of catering, please contact either Jude or Jot (chef). We hold a 5 star recognition for our food hygiene procedures, awarded via Herefordshire Council.
Please contact us for up to date prices
Security & Collection
At Gateway Nursery we take the security of our children very seriously.
Almost all sections of the nursery have secure access key pad systems or biometric door entry systems, including the front door. Anyone collecting a child who is unknown to us and not the named person will be asked to wait until their identity is verified. Although considered polite to do so, please do not hold the doors open for people…….particularly those you do not know or recognise. There are clear signs on our front access doors requesting this.
At no time and under no circumstances will a child be permitted to leave with someone that we cannot identify. We ask the anyone collecting your child from nursery must be over the age of 18 years unless where expressed permission has been granted by management.
